Alumni

Greetings to members of the APPA Alumni.

Combined Alumni/APPA Fellowship Lunch - Thursday 10 September 1pm @ Kohia Centre

Last year it was a well-attended event with plenty of time for reminiscing and meeting colleagues and, as well, hearing accounts of the projects undertaken by recent Fellowship Award people.

The lunch is at no cost to members being funded by the APPA Council’s budget for the Alumni so all that you have to do is get to Kohia at 78 Epsom Avenue, Epson. Drive down and up into the parking building and if the barrier is across just tell the speaker box that you have come for an APPA function and the barrier will magically rise for you to drive in.

If you plan to attend send me an email - glavmoss@xtra.co.nz

Final numbers will be required by the end of August but it is not too soon to let me know and please think of members who might appreciate a ride to the function.

Bereavements – please let me know if a member passes away so I can advise members by email.

Looking forward to a great gathering on Thursday 10 September – 1pm at the Kohia Centre.

Kind regards,
Gary Moss - APPA Alumni Convener

ALUMNI NEWSLETTER TERM 1 2020

PRINCIPALS WHO RETIRED IN 2019

  • Liz Horgan – St Joseph’s Otahuhu
  • Anne Malcolm – Ponsonby
  • Marianne Booth – St Francis Inner-city
  • Linley Myers – Royal Oak
  • Charmaine Munro – Sunnyvale
  • Catherine Rivers – St Mark’s Howick
  • David Tennant – St Mary’s Papakura
  • Sandra Jenkins – Freeman’s Bay

This is the list provided by the APPA office but there may be others not listed who would be interested in being part of the APPA Alumni – please email the APPA office or me with details. (In 2018 there were 5 retired Principals with whom contact was lost, but of course, some may have wanted to forget completely about schools and all that!)

Despite contacting their las school for contact information, no details were provided for the above names with an asterisk * and they will not receive Alumni communications unless I have their email address.

WELCOME

On behalf of the Auckland Primary Principals Association and Alumni members I welcome 2019 retirees to our group and if interested, I invite them to participate in the three functions we have each year, as this is a way of retaining contact with colleagues and also learning from the current APPA President and Council members, the educational issues of the moment – and there are sure to be some!

There is also a Retired Principals & Others group (now called MOCCA) where guys meet for lunch at a different RSA in Auckland each time on the last Wednesday of each month. New Lynn RSA is the first venue for this year – from about 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday 26th February. Send me an email or just arrive if interested – you would be most welcome.

AFTERNOON TEA GET-TOGETHER – KOHIA EDUCATION CENTRE APPA ROOM – THURSDAY 2 APRIL 1-3pm

Mark this date in your diary for an informal gathering at the Kohia Centre, 78 Epsom Avenue, Epsom. Drive down and up into the parking building and if the barrier is across just tell the speaker box that you have come for an APPA Alumni meeting and the barrier will magically rise for you to drive in.

In the past we have had up to 30 members coming to this first event of the year which is funded by the APPA Council.

Please think about joining us, bring colleagues and feel free to bring your spouse/partner. Closer to the time I will send an email to get an idea of the number to cater for. Thursday 2 April 1 – 3pm – make a note of the date.

KEEPING UP THE COMMUNICATION

The APPA Alumni list that I hold has the names of 225 retired Principals from Primary/Intermediate schools in the Auckland area. 200 members can be reached by email and the remaining 25 do not seem to have email addresses.

In the 2013 Term 4 Newsletter I matched those without email addresses with someone who does receive Alumni messages by email asking them to telephone the non-email person or copy off the newsletter or message and mail it to them so they are kept informed. I would be surprised if many have kept doing this but there will still be some out there who might join us if they had the details – if you know of someone like that please give them a call.

BEREAVEMENTS

One function of the Alumni Convenor is to inform everyone of the death of a past Principal. When it is known that a member has passed away I would appreciate being informed giving some information about the person’s past so that I can email the information to members.

EMAIL RESPONSE

If you think you will be most likely coming to the afternoon tea at the Kohia Centre in Epson on Thursday 2 April would you please flick me an email glavmoss@xtra.co.nz and that will give me an idea of how many to cater for.

Thank you
Kind regards,
Gary Moss – Convenor APPA Alumni
